Convention Honors & Awards

The Navy League of the United States at its National Convention each year honors councils and individual members who have excelled at executing the organization’s mission of advocacy and education for and on behalf of the U.S. sea services. Along with the presentation of these awards, the Navy League honors the nation’s best and brightest from the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and U.S.-flag Merchant Marine during its Sea Service Awards Luncheon. The following awards were presented during the 2016 Navy League National Convention June 15-18 in North Charleston, S.C.:

2016 Hall of Fame Inductees
The Navy League Hall of Fame recognizes members who have served on the national level 25 or more years in a volunteer capacity, and who have made significant contributions, particularly on the national level.  For 2016, the Navy League inducts:

Albert J. Herberger, life member, Navy League Scroll of Honor
Charles Shields, life member

Distinguished Service Award
This award is presented to a Navy League member who has made outstanding contributions during the past year. The 2016 honoree is:

Dave Samuels, life member and national director

President’s Award
The Annual President’s Award is presented to that member of the Navy League who has given the national president the most support during the past year. The 2016 honoree is:

Donald Mooers, national judge advocate general

Nicholas Brango Award for Inspirational Leadership
The Nicholas Brango Award for Inspirational Leadership is named for the former Executive Director of the Naval Sea Cadet Corps. This award is presented to a Naval Sea Cadet Corps officer who has excelled in all phases of Cadet Corps training, and whose outstanding leadership has made a significant contribution toward attainment of Navy League goals in the training and education of American youth during the preceding year. The Nicholas Brango Award and the Sea Cadet of the Year Award for 2016 is presented to:

LTJG Jo-Anne Dao from the Band of the West, San Mateo, Calif.

Sea Cadet of the Year
CPO Justin Duel from the Col William B. Travis Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Council Awards
Council Awards are presented each year to councils that have demonstrated performance across a broad spectrum of activities that include community education, youth activities, council activities, public affairs, legislative activities, recruiting and retention.

Honorable Mention
The Honorable Mention Council Award is presented to councils that have demonstrated above average performance in these areas. The 2015 Honorable Mention councils and their 2015 presidents are as follows:

The Meritorious Council Award is presented to councils that have performed extremely well within the judged criteria. Mackie Awards
Donald M. Mackie Awards are presented annually at the National Convention for newsletters and websites. Judges are selected on the basis of their expertise in the field of journalism, newsletter and web publishing or a related field.

The Donald M. Mackie Newsletter Awards are judged by an independent panel of judges who have deemed the following council newsletters to be the most outstanding in the category:

Sea Service Awards
Navy Leaguers around the world are dedicated to making sure the American people and their lawmakers are aware of the important role our sea services play in our national defense and economic prosperity.
